Vienna to Host Major European Microbiology Congress

Vienna previously hosted ECCMID, the major congress for clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, in 1995, 2010 and 2017. Recently the city was confirmed as destination for the fourth time in 2025. by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), which is headquartered in Switzerland. Good transport connections and accessibility are important criteria for the attending microbiologists, who travel from all over Europe, as are excellent conference infrastructure and a high-quality destination experience. Since its inception in 1983, ECCMID has seen its size and reputation grow steadily and now attracts delegates from as many as 150 countries. This year, United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France and Italy were among the most strongly represented nations. The congress will be complemented by exhibitions, keynote speeches, workshops, expert meetings and a networking corner. This year's ECCMID was held in Copenhagen at the end of April, and it will be held in Barcelona in 2024, before it comes to Vienna in 2025.

Norbert Kettner, Director of the Vienna Tourist Board
"I would like to express my thanks to ESCMID for their long-standing trust in Vienna as a congress destination and warmly welcome them to this city, which is once again demonstrating its strengths in the field of human medicine: of those overnight stays generated by congresses in Vienna in 2022, medical congresses accounted for the lion's share at 45% – a new record. This year, the conference metropolis of Vienna is continuing on its path of success; we are expecting a total of 18 major events with over 3,000 participants, half of whom belong to the field of human medicine."

Christian Woronka, Head of the Vienna Convention Bureau
"
Vienna has once again proven to be an excellent location for the annual congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The largest European congress in the field of clinical microbiology and infection further reinforces Vienna's role as an international hub for science, research and medicine. We are already looking forward to hosting ESCMID again in 2025 with great anticipation."
