Back on Track: Two major congresses brought more than 15,000 participants to Meeting Destination Vienna in mid-June

The 2022 meeting year is in full swing. Since spring, major events have again been taking place in Meeting Destination Vienna, including the "EGU General Assembly". The annual meeting of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) took place in May with over 7,000 participants from 89 nations. Almost as many people participated virtually in the hybrid event.

In mid-June, two major events met in Vienna: The Annual Congress of the European Hematology Association (EHA) took place from June 9 to 12 at the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center , and the 55th Conference of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) started a few days later, on June 11, at the Austria Center Vienna.

EHA: 30th anniversary and the first hybrid Congress

Vienna was already scheduled as destination for the Annual Congress of the European Hematology Association in 2021. Due to the pandemic, the congress could only take place virtually. In 2022, however, the time had come: from June 9 to 17, 2022, the first hybrid "Congress of the European Hematology Association" took place. The 30th anniversary of the association was celebrated at the same time. About 10,200 participants from 77 nations took part from June 9 to 12 on site, at the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center. Almost 6,000 participants were connected online and followed the live streamed sessions via the Congress platform. Subsequently, the EHA Congress continued purely virtually from June 15 to 17 as part of the “Thematic days”.

ESHG: The future of human genetics

Parallel to the congress of the EHA, the "55th European Human Genetics Conference" took place from June 11 to 14 at the Austria Center Vienna. During the four-day congress, numerous lectures, workshops and symposia were on the agenda. This event was held as a hybrid meeting as well. The virtual conference platform served as the online "venue" for the congress. ESHG's goal was to transfer all aspects of the event to the virtual environment. Thus, online participants not only had access to presentations (live stream and on-demand) but were also able to browse the presented posters digitally.

The conference of the European Society of Human Genetics welcomed 4,955 participants from 81 countries on site, about 1,300 people followed the event virtually.

"The ESHG is glad to have selected Austria as country of incorporation for its association. Vienna is also the location of ESHG’s headquarters in the offices of the Wiener Medizinische Akademie GmbH. The last visit of our conference to Vienna dates back more than one decade, so it was high time to come back. In a time of uncertainty due to the pandemic, having Vienna as the place of the first in person meeting since 2019, had many advantages, not the least of which being that, besides our conference organiser, most of our partners are located in Vienna. Last but not least, Vienna remains one of the most attractive conference locations in Europe, due to its great infrastructure in terms of meeting venues, hotels and public transportation. We are delighted to have welcome so many international geneticists to "our home", says Jerome del Picchia, ESHG Executive Officer.
