2022 UEG Week in Vienna – a Premiere to Mark the Anniversary

After two years as an online event due to the pandemic, UEG Week – one of the most important meetings worldwide in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology – will be returning to Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center as an in-person event in 2022. And this year’s event is a premiere: for the first time, the United European Gastroenterology Week will be held as a hybrid congress, meaning that participants can engage via the online congress platform or in person in Vienna. In all, around 10,000 experts from the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology are expected to attend.

"I am looking forward to the 2022 edition of our annual UEG Week congress in Vienna very much! Our 30th anniversary meeting will be a great opportunity for the entire digestive health community to meet and network in person again, while comparing notes on the latest scientific advances – in a state-of-the-art venue in our much-loved congress and HQ destination: Vienna", said UEG President Helena Cortez-Pinto.

Packed Four-Day Program

UEG Week, which will take place in the Austrian capital for the fifth time in 2022, again underlines the pioneering role played by the organization in digestive tract disease research. Over the course of four days, participants will present and discuss research projects and innovative approaches. Two opening sessions will get proceedings under way. In addition to featuring top abstract presentations and fascinating lectures, the congress will host the presentation ceremony for the UEG Research Prize. Interdisciplinary sessions will focus on new diagnostic and treatment approaches with a particular emphasis on innovative, technical advances in the non-invasive treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases, as well as translational and basic research.

Among the other highlights of the 2022 UEG Week are a series of lectures on the topic of error culture (learning from the mistakes of other experts), a one-day symposium focusing on immunomodulation in gastrointestinal diseases, and the Today's Science; Tomorrow's Medicine initiative. The latter focuses on research into genetic vulnerabilities in gastrointestinal disease and their clinical implications.

Live and on-demand virtual congress platform

Once again, UEG Week will be giving participants access to a comprehensive virtual congress platform. Starting in the entrance lobby – where the UEG booth, virtual press center and helpdesk are located – the congress continues into the main halls where three areas await: World of Science, Live TV Studio and Industry. All talks will be broadcast in real time on the online platform. In addition, participants following proceedings online will have the opportunity to interact live, ask questions in real time and network with their colleagues worldwide. All live sessions are also available to view on-demand.

30th anniversary highlights

The UEG’s 30th anniversary celebrations in 2022 are designed to actively engage with participants who will be treated to a special mini birthday cake from Sacher. A special Anniversary Session will take a look at some of the scientific breakthroughs that have helped shape the world of gastroenterology over the past three decades. UEG Night promises to be a special highlight this time round, when the organization’s 30th anniversary will be celebrated in a very special setting: Vienna’s Gothic Revival City Hall.
