Colorful and diverse: Vienna's new hotels

Cosmopolitan Island of Greenery Near MuseumsQuartier: Hotel Gilbert

Since the end of December, Hotel Gilbert, a new 4-star hotel with a cosmopolitan philosophy and outstanding service, has been located near the Museumsquartier in the center of Vienna.
Created by BWM, the interior design concept of the family-run hotel provides a clear thread running through all of the 57 fancy flats, classy suites and epic lofts. Amenities include two meeting rooms, gym and sauna as well as e-Vespa and e-bike hire.

The hotels green facade sends out a strong message about sustainability and the need to adapt to a changing climate: the living wall system installed by Dutch greening specialists Sempergreen and planned by Green4Cities in Vienna helps keep temperatures down while cutting noise levels. There are also luscious terraces, a verdant courtyard and countless plants inside the building. At hotel café-brasserie &flora, chef de cuisine Parvin Razavi’s dishes are fully in line with the principle of “from root to leaf”: which means almost no part of the vegetable or fruit goes to waste.

Hip Hotel in a New City Development: Bassena Wien Donaustadt

Following the Bassena Wien Messe Prater, a further VERKEHRSBUERO HOSPITALITY property, the Bassena Wien Donaustadt, is due to open in the third quarter of 2022 in the new Vienna Twentytwo district in the 22nd district. The four-star hotel will be both a hip, unconventional hotel and relaxing retreat. Its 198 rooms, each of which is just under 17m² are spread across nine floors. The term “Bassena” refers to the communal water taps with sinks that used to be found on the corridors of Viennese apartment buildings and were typical meeting places for gossiping. That said, every room at Hotel Bassena Wien Donaustadt does have its own sink!
The first floor is a communal zone featuring a library, Bassena Kitchen (incl. community table and bar with food and drink available from morning until evening), a living room, wintergarden and terrace with table service. Created by Kitzig Design Studios, the interior design is young, dynamic and brimming with life. Popular recreation areas such as the Danube Island, Donaupark and Old Danube are just a few minutes away. The Austria Center Vienna can be reached quickly by subway.

Homage to Emperor Leopold I: The Leo Grand

Just a few steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna-based developers Lenikus are transforming a heritage-listed building into a luxury hotel with 76 rooms and suites.  A combination of its prime location and an uncompromisingly – and unconventional – luxury concept will see The Leo Grand set new standards. A celebration of individuality and contemporary indulgence, the hotel opens in April 2022.

Head designer Gabriele Lenikus and her team have delivered a bold reconsideration of Baroque opulence, recasting it in a spectacular present-day light. The design pays homage to the eccentric, larger-than-life and art-loving Emperor Leopold I (1640-1705), who is a constant presence here. The Leo Grand’s character also extends to its hospitality offering: which includes what must be the capital’s most exclusive Schanigarten café, a covered courtyard, an elegant bar and several private dining areas.

Successful Social Business: magdas Hotel Vienna City

magdas Hotel is Austria’s first ever social business hotel. Committed to helping people from refugee backgrounds to gain a foothold on the labor market, it gives them the professional hospitality industry qualifications they need to do precisely that. The first magdas location at the Prater is moving to a former seminary in the third district, where it will open in September 2022: The new magdas Hotel Vienna City offers 85 rooms, two event spaces, a restaurant and a former chapel offering myriad meeting options that go far beyond the traditional confines of a hotel business. Architecture studio BWM was tasked with adapting the 1960s building, ready for its new purpose. In the rooms, a combination of new designer furniture as well as reused and upcycled elements will reflect the rich diversity at play at magdas. Sustainability was key to the construction and energy scheme: the former car park is now a garden, with greening measures also in place for the facades and terraces.

The flair of the 1920s: Hotel Motto

When it opened in fall 2021, Hotel Motto added a new hotel to the Viennese portfolio that in many ways is in a class all of its own. Located on Mariahilferstrasse, the capital's busiest shopping street and one of the liveliest spots anywhere in the city, the new arrival served up a touch of 1920s Parisian charm, contemporary Viennese style and a dash of Scandi coziness. Its official tagline is "Vienna meets Paris". And the opulence of the interiors is definitely on-message: featuring floral fabric wallpaper, decorative mirrors and fun chandeliers, the rooms and suites exude a dreamy, relaxed and creative ambience. Custom carpets, furniture, tiles and lamps designed exclusively for the hotel by Arkan Zeytinoglu Architects are paired with vintage furnishings – some of which are actual originals from the legendary Paris Ritz. But Hotel Motto is not just about a playful take on the past. The creative spirits behind the 91 rooms and suites at this boutique hotel talk about an "unusual mix of punk rock and avant-garde". It also has plenty to say for itself from a culinary perspective: high above street level on the roof of the historic 1870s building is a restaurant complete with bar and terrace. On the ground floor it has its very own organic bakery that is every bit the equal of the rest of the luxury establishment in terms of decor.

Welcome to the Superbude

Vienna shows that it more than lives up to its reputation as a leading city for congresses, meetings, and events of every kind with the opening of a large number of new hotels. The opening of the Superbude Wien at the beginning of June 2021 marked the first location of the Superbude Hotels outside Germany. It is located in the immediate vicinity of Messe Wien and offers a hotel concept that combines the best of many worlds: "Hotel comfort, hostel vibe, and home feeling," is how the Superbude describes itself. Business travelers who love a relaxed, contemporary ambience are as warmly welcomed here as weekend visitors. A total of 178 "digs" of between 20 and 57 square meters are available to choose from. Conferences, events, and meetings are also possible at the Superbude. Three differently styled rooms with modern conferencing technology offer space for up to 45 people. The Superbude is also extremely exciting on the food front. "NENI am Prater" is on the same site and is a fantastic Israeli restaurant with bar and rooftop terrace.

Zeitgeist zone: Zoku Vienna

Another exciting addition to the hotel scene has opened right next door to the Superbude. Zoku Vienna is the Netherlands-based Zoku group’s first foray into the Austrian capital. Here, the innovative focus is on balancing leisure and working-from-home requirements. Its special home-office hybrid solution is designed to appeal to people who are often on the road for work. That said, anyone traveling privately will also be in the best possible hands thanks to the stylish and beautifully thought-through interiors at this 131-room boutique hotel. With a touch of hostel chic, the Zoku Hotel philosophy is all about creating places that feel like a home from home the moment guests step through the door. Social spaces are just one of the ways that the operators achieve this: by giving guests a place to mix with each other, it creates a friendly local neighborhood vibe. Hotspots include the rooftop terrace overlooking the Prater park, an in-house event center that is tailor-made for small-scale meetings, and the Living Kitchen where everyone can sit down to dinner together at trestle tables.

Good Vibes: Jaz in the City

The reception recreates a record shop vibe, all 163 rooms and suites have a record player, and the multifunctional event rooms are just as suited to business meetings as to parties of all kinds. Following Amsterdam and Stuttgart, industry newcomer Jaz in the City has now opened a hotel in Vienna. Brimming with zeitgeist, the hotel strikes a distinctly musical chord, and guests can look forward to daily live music, concerts and spontaneous jam sessions. Jaz in the City also hits the right culinary notes: rooftop bar mariatrink Drinks & Views offers a spectacular panorama of the city, accompanied by excellent cocktails. Situated in one of the most sought-after areas of the city, between Mariahilfer Strasse and Naschmarkt, the hotel's location is also bound to make Jaz in the City a hit with visitors.

Made of wood, but not wooden

A really exciting newcomer among Vienna's hotels is the Dormero HoHo. It is the first project of the Dormero Group in Austria. A special location was chosen for it. The hotel, which opened its doors at the beginning of July 2021, is located in Seestadt Aspern, one of Europe's largest urban development areas. The hotel building itself, the Hoho highrise, is one of the tallest of its kind made from wood in the world, and sets new benchmarks in terms of sustainable construction. It offers a cosmopolitan, relaxed hotel concept with a very youthful atmosphere. On the 15th floor are large seminar rooms with a great panoramic view. The 143-room Dormero Hoho is also interesting for meeting and event guests because a completely new event location has been created in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Ariana, the new event venue, opened in April 2022. Events for up to 830 visitors are possible on 1,300 square meters.

Even more luxury for Vienna

Notable growth will also take place in the luxury segment in 2023. The first Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Vienna, with 151 rooms and suites as well as 17 luxury penthouse apartments, is being created in a magnificent Art Nouveau building on Riemergasse, near to St. Stephen's Cathedral. Rooms for conferences and meetings are also planned.
